Description: Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is a major extracellular carrier of cholesterol and plays an important physiologic role in cellular function and metabolism. LDL accounts for more than 60% of total plasma cholesterol in the blood. LDL-receptor binds to the LDL particle and mediates its internalization through an endosomal-lysosomal pathway, leading to complete degradation. Higher amount of LDL-C is often associated with increase cardiovascular risk and pathologic conditions like hyperlipidemia, oxidative stress, atherosclerosis and stroke. Increased LDL-receptor expression by pharmacological intervention efficiently reduces blood LDL concentrations. BioIntersect provides a very sensitive tool quantitate the amount of LDL uptake and its regulation using a proprietary fluorescent reagent by the cells.
